A group of people have joined together in an effort to save a beloved treasure, the legendary Brookvale High School, the last remaining Black High School in Lancaster County, VA. The school closed after forced integration in 1969.
The Save Brookvale History Committee, with the cooperation of the Board of Supervisors, administrators of the County of Lancaster, VA, and some community liaisons, are working together to organize a May Day which will be held May 17, 2025 on the grounds and in the building of our beloved Brookvale High School, 36 Primary Circle School, Lancaster, VA, 22503 10am-5pm.
We plan, as part of the festivities, to include traditional rivalry games represented by the Lancaster County Public Schools as A.T. Wright, and Brookvale, vs Northumberland County Public Schools, as Julius Rosenwald, and Central, and with participates from each of the counties’ youth groups, any other organizations, and individuals that wish to participate.
The May Day events will include some of the following:
Three Legged Race
Sack Races
May Day Pole Wrapping for the young and old
Arts and Crafts displays from the local senior living facilities
Water Gun Warfare
Playground Area for Kids
Bookmobile
VA Institute of Marine Science
Higher learning institutions
ROTC
And much, much more
There will also be local entertainment, as well as local food vendors, and vendor displays.
The dedication for a historical highway maker for Brookvale High School will hopefully be the same day.
To be able to accomplish our goal we will need a lot of help financially as well physically. We are reaching out to businesses, churches, organizations and individuals for help with monetary donations, and volunteers; components that are critical to the success of this event.
